I need to tow my car into a garage to get the power steering pump replaced. I don't want to drive it in, in case metal shaving get into the rack. Don't really want to replace that either. I have a buddy with a car dolly; I've been looking online and everyone tells me not to do this as it will mess up my rear diff. I don't understand how that if the front wheels are lifting off the ground and the tranny is in neutral, how will that damage the rear diff?

I think the center diff can be damaged if you tow a Quattro on only 1 axle...the flatbed is your friend.

You can only do that if you pull the rear drive shaft.

Just rent a u-haul trailer not a dolley

In general you never tow any car with the drive wheels spinning if it has an automatic. Because the pump is not pumping fluid and cooling it. So basically you would be spinning the transmission without lubrication.
You must pull the drive shaft before you do so.
This drive shaft ain't no GM, 4 bolts and it's out special either.
