Transmission Fluid change on High mileage?

I would like Every members opinion on changing the trans fluid on a 2000 audi a6 2.8 v6 with 145000. Is it going to help prolong the car? Or mess the transmission up? I dont have any problems yet. Thanks for your advice.

Automatic or MT6. I had fresh fluid put in my MT6 at 89k miles when I replaced my clutch. Also replaced fluids in the rear differential and transfer case. Currently at 130k and no immediate plans to change it again.

It is a automatic triptonic transmission 5speed. Do I need to replace the clutch when I change the fluid? I have never had my differential fluid changed either but I had the dealer replace my transaxle case seal replaced. They charged me $450. Which I consider a rip off

Personally I feel it would be a good preventive measure to replace the ATF at 145k miles, along with the differential fluid. But that is just me...:)
No clutch to replace with the Tiptronic unless wou need to replace the clutch pack in the torque converter (doubtful) .

I opted to change the "lifetime" ATF and differential fluids in my 05 4.2 at 40,000 miles as preventive maintainance. The car shifted much smoother after the change.

Should I change the fluid on my own?

nemohm Feb 18, 2009 11:00 AM

There is no correct answer to your question!
With 145000 you are far beyond the reasonable maintenance that should be followed.
Changing the fluid at this point is a pure gambling.
Not changing - gambling as well.
There are many reports here that doing first service at high mileage is nothing but trouble.
Judging by your understanding of the nature of cars-transmissions I'd strongly doubt you have the technical expertise to change the ATF by yourself.
Find somebody to do it for you, but do not expect miracles.

I have replaced transmission fluid on my chevy tahoe a few years ago when the mileage was 138,000. The fluid had never been changed and the truck currently has 156,000. It is running strong. That is one reason I feel that the fluid on my a6 should be changed. I am going to by the pump for the fluid and try to change it myself. I do not trust transmission shops at all. I feel they are out to screw you as much as possible.

There are a ton of horror stories where people change the ATF on their high milage Audis. nemohn is correct it is a pure gamble.

I have 210K on my 97 2.8 A6 and the only time I touched the ATF was when I had to add a little after I changed the radiator. We sold my daughters 95 A6 with 198K and never checked the ATF level. My friend has a 95 2.8 A6 with close to 250K and he hasn't changed his.

transmission oil change

It is a great preventive measure to change atf oil , i know on north american cars you can expect trouble , how ever i have a A8 with 80k and the transmission shifted from 1st to second when cold with a hard shift, but after warming the trans it was ok. after a oil change (from dealer under warranty) the transmission is like new. so...i would do the oil change and speacialy if you are going to keep the audi.
