Default Transmission "thud" when shifting

I just picked up a 98 A6 with the 2.8 and it runs and looks great, but when shifting out of park into drive or reverse, the transmission makes a thud sound. I was reading up on changing the transmission fluid or even checking it but there is a lifetime warranty on the fluid? I find that hard to believe... especially having 140k on the clock...

Any ideas or information?

The fluid is lifetime fluid, but that doesn't mean there is a warranty on it. The thud you describe sounds more like a motor or transmission mount, but it could be low fluid. A quick visit to your dealer will give you the root cause and an estimate then you can decide on a DIY or a Pay the Man repair.

Most likely a universal joint.
My 98 Avant at 225K miles does it and I'm just ignoring it.
The tranny fluid has nothing to do with the noise

I agree U-joint or CV-joint and check to make sure your lug nuts are tight.

You bet it's fully warranteed for it's lifetime, unfortunatley if the fluid goes bad it's dead and no longer alive so it would be out of warranty at that point. LOL!

The "lifetime" term is from "sales" to fool unwary owners into waiting until the transmission slips or bangs, so that they may offer a great deal on a new car. You may get an ATF refill kit from www.blauparts.com, or go to the dealer.

You make it sound sooooo...Easy

If you do get that kit order 2 extra liters they don't send enough fluid.
