I have a 2000 A6 2.7T and have heard conflicting information about upgrading the fog lights. They are very useful in PA where night time visibility is sometimes very compromised in inclement weather. Also, I have had Mustang GTs and Porsche 944Ts with upgraded fog lights and really appreciate the added visibility they provide on the road surface directly in front of the car.

Question is this: How do I upgrade the fog lights to brighter ones? I have heard that just putting in an uprated bulb will overtax the wiring and probably cause wire melting and possible fires. I can believe that in some cases but don't want to try to find out by trial and error and wind up with an error (fire). I have also heard that LED replacements can provide quite a bit more light output at lower wattages but not sure where to source them and don't necessarily trust ebay sources.

I'd like to hear from somebody who has actual experience doing an upgrade, as theory is fine, but practical experience is what is needed.
