2004 A6 3.0 TDi quattro Check Engine Light after long trips
FYI: its an automatic gearbox (important detail for this??)
Hey there, some years ago, in 2007, unsure, we did a 1006km trip to Benidorm, same day, stopping only for lunch, and 1 week later returned. All fine!
The year later, we did a trip to Marbella, around 900km each trip, stopped only for lunch. On the return, around 200km or less away from home, check engine light comes on. None of us really knew what it meant at the time, we phoned a mechanic, tried to describe it by phone..
Mechanic told its a fault on some valve, cant remember the name, he probably thought it was another light.
Nonetheless, it went away after a few days, maybe 2 or 3, and it was definitely not a loose gas cap, as it did not appear after a refuel, and im quite sure it had been refueled also, before it disappearing.
So we never took it to the mechanic about it...
Car has done some 500km trips and more, fine, all great, but just this week, on wednesday, my parents went on a little vacation for them, they drove some km's, found a hotel, the day later they went on to spain, around Bilbao, having done around 650-700km total?, Maybe more, not sure tbh. All fine, then on friday they return...
And again, around 300km away from home, having done already 1500km in 3 days, that day being the one with most km's done, Check engine light came on (steady, always was steady even the other year).
Today we needed to do another trip, 150km to get there, and 150km to return, car did it great, fuel consumption is the same, idles perfectly, no weird noises, performs just the same, having done already around 750km post check engine light. My parents will probably find some time this week to take it to the dealer, to get the code, incase it does not go away before that.
Nonetheless, even if it does not go away like the last time, why is it that this happens, on the long trips? I mean, maybe its just a coincidence but the only time we saw it comming, besides this one, was on a long trip, having gone away a few days later....
Car usually is driven in the city, maybe 5km per day, some days around 15, but rarely exceeding. Its from 2004, has only got around 156.000km!
Any opinions? thanks in advance!
