Water pump/timing belt....help
Had my 2001 A6 Avant in the shop to fix some recall items and was told that the mechanic heard some noises on the water pump (bearings?). Anyway, I was told that if I decide to replace the water pump, then I should also replace the timing belt, and if I replace the timing belt something else needed to be replaced. I just purchased the car with 150,000 miles on it and it is in excellent condition, but have no ideal if the previous owner took care of the car mechanically. I assume it was taken care of considering how good the car looks.
Anyway, I'm in for $750.....just want to check to see if the water pump, timing belt, etc.....really all need to be replaced at the same time or if I've been taken.
thanks

RE: Water pump/timing belt....help
Yes those parts all need to be replaced at the same time. Any one of the parts in the system can break down causing the timing belt to break. So it's a good idea to replace them all, it only takes a half hour more to change them. At 150,000, i'd say you are almost due for another change so get it done.
