We're new....and need a little help (PLEASE READ)
In 1990, we bought an '87 4000S, fell in love and, in 1998, bought a '93 90 CS. The CS, with 158K is wearing down and (forgive me for saying) we think our cash would be better spent moving forward than staying in (and maintaining) the past. So, after all that, we are days away from purchasing a 2000 A6 4.2. It's one of the most beautiful cars we've seen (that we can afford and maintain), but really want to hear any all comments that any of you may have.
It has 65K, had two owners -one, a leasee for 3 years, the other, an owner for two. Now, possibly, we will be the owners.
We have an option of a 2002 A6 3.0 with 47K at, relatively, the same price: 17.5K
Please talk to us, both cars will go through full systems check outs at a very reputable DC area Audi dealership. We expect to close the deal, one way or the other, in six days.
We test drove both ~Mike like the Black 3.0 (still under a warranty) and Debbie likes the BEAUTIFUL and LUXURIOUS V8...

Both cars are awesome!! It depends though on who is taking care of the fuel bill. I drove a 4.2 V8 for 2 days while my car was in for repair and was horrified by the extreme fuel consumption. Granted, I was comparing it to my 2.4 Multitronic which gives me roughly 11L/100km in town and 8.5-9L/100km on the highway. The V8 was more in the region of 20L/100km in town and I was driving her gently. Then again, I guess your fuel is far cheaper than ours here in South Africa at R5.00/L. Personally, I would take the one still under warranty.

To be honest I'd go with the one with warranty. As jughead(?) mentioned, the warranty is a nice thing to have. I'd also check the engine reliability history of both engines to see what can go wrong. I'm not sure about the difference in performance, but I don't a 3 liter engine is gonna let you down much. In terms of luxury, that is a personal taste: I own an A6 (97) and to be honest I'd like the A4 better since it's a sportier car.
Also it seems like you guys are having some difficulties with your current car. More luxury can mean more headache (as the car ages), since there are more things to go wrong.
hope this helps.

The v8 is a nice engine, but as jughead says, the gas milage is BAD...I have an S4 with a 4.2 V8 and combined city/Hway is about 16 mpg. Not sure what the figures are for the A6, but I am sure there is going to be a big fuel bill for the v8.
Are the interiors comporable??

OK I'm gonna take some of my words back!!! Depending on what type of V8 it is, the gas comsumption can be very close between the 3 and the 4.2 Lt engines. Unless you have the more powerfull (non-turbo or tubo) ones, the gas comsumption is about 1-2 mpg! So I take some of my words back!!!
