235 = Width of tire in mm
40 = tire wall ratio
18 = rim diameter

When you plus size your rims, you should typically kep the width identical, lower the tire wall ratio (45 to 40 for 18" rims, or 35 for 19") to make up for the larger rim size. Overall diameter and Revolution Per Mile should remain close as you plus size. Discount Tire has a good tire calculator.

If you kept rim size identical (ie 17) but wanted to get a wider tire, you would need to decrease the second # (tire wall ratio) as well. I did that on my Fiat a long time ago.

Ok so for example the velocity Rs4's are 8.5 across, and the DTM's are 8, would the 235 work on both of thoes?

was anyone able to run 245 on their A6?
