Exclamation Whining Noise

I was on my way to class and after 5 minutes on the high way I heard a whining noise. So I pulled over look at see if something was hung up in the front tire area because that is were the noise is coming from. I then started to pull away and got up to about 40 miles an hour and I heard the noise again and as I gained speed It became louder. It dont go away unless I come to a compete stop and then it will restart again when I hit about 40 mph. I'm wondering if its a transmission issue?

IF you start out from a stop and there is no noise. When the noise starts at 40 and gets louder as you speed up. Does is get quieter as you slow down and stop when your under 40 or does it stay at the same volume until you stop?

it gets louder as I gain speed. Then as I let off the gas its not as loud and when I'm at a complete stop you cant hear it until you start to speed up.

Is it related to car speed or engine speed? When the car is moving it could be tire whine (due to wear or type of road surface), differentials, or transmission (you don't mention whether it is a tip or MT6; assume tip). If it is related to engine speed, it could be various bearings (water pump, A/C compressor, P/S) or turbos. But you should still hear it if the car is stationary and you gently rev the motor to your 40+ mph rpm.

do this...warm it up and rev it in park...then place it in neutral and rev again, then place in drive and hold break and rev again to 4-5K if it will do it, it should be trying to "get away". If none of those tests give you your sound then I would think your motor is good. Next tranny tests. Cruise around your hood a bit to make sure the tranny fluid is hot and then play. Slowly get up to the speed your noise usually appears and then back off and speed up over and over to make sure that your speed and not RPM bring on the noise. Next I would get up to the critical speed and then brake and press the gas at the same time while trying to keep your speed this should show if the tranny is making noise under load. If all of these do not reveal the cause then I would almost guarantee its tire/suspension related. Thats all i got for ya
