Default Your opinions on an A6...

I've been looking at A4s for the last month trying to find one with decent mileage with a good price and have came across a couple but this week I found a 2000 A6 2.7t 6speed manual with 59k miles on it for only 12,500. all the a4s i've been looking for are 2001-03 and are mostly all around 13-15grand with higher miles than this A6.
I want a car that I can mod and i know that either turbo audi it is possible for a good amount of mods.....so my question is should I go for the cheaper A6 with lower miles or spend more for a couple years newer and more miles A4 1.8t?

Also I've been reading thru this forum for the past month looking at mod options and was wondering with the A6 if you get the apr or giac chip as a starter mod (along with required parts, dv, etc)then move up to the bigger turbo upgrade will either company do chip flashes for the upgraded turbos since i can't seem to find anything on the aftermarket websites for A6 turbo upgrade kits but only the s4 2.7t.

thanks guys....hoping to go check out this a6 this weekend

I can't recommend A4 over A6 but I can tell you my experiences. I bought a 2003 A6 2.7T MT6 with 37k miles in March 2005 and now have 89k. In October I installed a GIAC chip. After reading everything on this site, I also went for Bailey Diverter Valves and a Samco TBB to prevent problems. Totalled about $1000 including labor. Performance improvement was noticeable, especially accelerating from 70 up. It also removed the electronic governor.

While I drive conservatively in the lower gears, I do jump on it on the highway. Result, I now need a clutch. Going for a stage 2 from Awe which will set me back another $1000. (According to my wife, everything is a thousand on this car.) That assumes the flywheel has no damage.

I'm planning on a timing belt kit and rebuild this spring/summer (can you guess...another $1000).

Otherwise the only problems I didn't make for myself were a brake sensor and a leaking rear transmission seal replaced under 50k warranty, and the alternator failed after hitting a bad bump at 68k.

Other than that, it's a great car. Comfortable. Bose is fantastic. Ride is excellent, although I'm thinking about performance shocks (another $1000) in the future. Acceleration off the line is so-so. With the GIAC it winds so quickly after hitting 3500 rpm that it's a little scary. But it is really made to cruise at high speed and is steady with plenty of pick-up from 70-120. And it is fantastic in the snow.

yeaeither audi i getthe first mods i plan on are chip exhaust and intake.

do you think $12,500 is a good deal for a 2000 A6 2.7t 6 speedwith 59k miles on it? its got all the common options; leather, bose 6 disc, sunroof, etc.

i'm gonna go to the dealer tomorrow and check it out and if i like it and decide its a good deal get the thing this weekend.

well i just got back from checking it out and a test drive.

i've only test driven an a4....this A6 is much nicer. the 6 speed is great and shifts perfect. rode wonderfully. the exterior looked to be in excellent shape, engine clean and strong. the interior had a few little things like the common audi info lcd. it only had a couple lines burt out and you could still read everything. and it had some green stuff that looked like it could be cleaned off and the cloth liner in the thing that was under the front arm rest is peeling out.
does audi sell replacement info lcds? if so does anyone know how much they cost?
hopefully everything will go right and i'll be picking up the car this weekend

The entire instrument cluster is one piece. You can't just replace the lcd info screen. I believe they are around $300-400 at the dealer (might be off on the price).

You might want to try cleaning out the connection to the LCD I dont know if it will work. but worth a shot. BTW the A6 is amazing in that 2.7T engine. I love mine. Perfect all around specialy for highway cruising. I would say deffinatly go for it. I payed $14.500 for mine with 70,000 miles. dont regret it one bit. love the car.
