1998 Audi A8

Hi,

Pulling my A8 out of storage after a few years to do a bunch of work. Luckily I won't be doing most of it, but I do need to pull the climate control until out to be reserviced (there is a company on ebay that does it with great reviews so I will give it a try). Looked around here and didn't find any info for this year.

Question is how do I pull it out? I have seen some videos on Youtube where you pull the radio out first with those slot tools, but that is an A6 from another year and the console is completely different. I can see my radio has two slots on the top. Then someone says for a different year you just push out the climate control after the radio is out. Is this correct?

Ideally you can pull the entire fake wood panel off. I mean what if you want to change a bulb on a switch?

Finally, I am redoing the entire suspension front and rear. Do the springs need to be replaced? Car has 162,000 miles on it and I want to upgrade everything to the sturdier S8 suspension. Seen videos of struts being changed, which I really need, and saw the control arms on top have to come out so that was a no brainer to replace those at the same time, and then do the lower ones. But videos of strut removal they keep the springs. But do the springs need replacing? They are cheap and might as well do it right? And are the S8 springs going to be different?

Thanks!

Get a set of removal keys for the radio off an eBay vendor. They are $10 or so. Removing the radio takes 30 seconds. Once it's out, accessing the connections for the climate control is a snap. Also once the radio is out of the way, it will probably reveal any fasteners for the climate control that need to be removed.

Springs? I doubt that you need to replace them. Only if you want to modify the ride height maybe.

Hi,

Thanks so much for the quick info. I got the keys on ebay so I will give it a try. I also called the Audi dealer and he said the same thing. Springs don't need to be replaced, and if I wanted the S8 springs for 1998 the mounting plate on the top of the spring is a different size and he wasn't sure if I could mount it on my car. I probably could, but I will just stick with current springs. New struts should make a different. I was using my car as a work van substitute and lots of times the truck was so full the rear was bottomed out. Sure the struts are bad. Anyhow, thanks again. I love this forum. Helped me so many times!!
