Default 2005 A8 Power Trunk

The power trunk does not lift automatically using either the key fob, button on the trunk, or the drivers door. Dealer told me the lift motor is bad. $828.00 to replace it.

Does anyone know where I could get a replacement motor? And the instructions to replace it myself?

Thanks!

you may want to look for a used part. there is a site, "car-parts.com" (note the hyphen) which i have found very helpful. apparently used motors are available.

Thanks, that's exactly what I was thinking (buying from a salvage yard).

On second thought, I wondering if the motor is really bad even based on the dealer's analysis. When I hit the button on the trunk, the lid pops up about a quart of an inch but then drops down.

At that point, I "help" the lid up and it raises up. The motor sounds like it's doing it's job.

When the lid is raised, it hit the button on the inside of the trunk to lower it. Again, the lid gets stuck so I need to "help" it by pushing it down slightly then the motor takes over
and it does it's job of closing the lid.

I wonder if something needs to be adjusted (i.e. - hinges, etc.). I don’t want to buy a $350 trunk motor but still have the same problem.

I’m planning to buy the Bentley manual, perhaps the manual will describe how to make this adjustment (if that’s the issue).

Any thoughts?

Definitely get the manual first. It will likely give you more insight into the real problem.
It's very different than my D2 trunk and not included in my Bentley manual (D2 only), so can't tell you much more. Could be upper or lower latch, rather than a motor or drive cable problem (?)

Technical Service Bulletin 55-06-01, Concern #2 addresses your description directly.

"...may be caused by:

Trunk lid hinge is stiff (corrosion in the hinge joints).

Wrong Gas-filled strut installed.

Trunk lid drive unit does not provide enough torque for operating the trunk (particularly in subzero temperatures), solenoid clutch in the drive slips through."

The fix involves replacing the hinges and/or motor. Bummer...

This was great info. Thanks for posting. My 8 has the same issue. Replaced the shocks and lubed the hinges (cheap $50 fix) and it still does the same thing. Sure hope its not the motor but all signs point to it.

Had the same problem (A8L 2005), bought two Stabilus SG301045 Lift Supports and replaced mine. Now the trunk opens easily, either from the driver's door, or from the trunk. The problem now is that the trunk is not closing from pressing the button and requires a little nudge. Any ideas?
