2006 A8L OBD2 Software

I am a New Member with a 2006 A8L 4.2.
I have been trying to find a OBD2 Diagnostic Software setup for my A8L.
Most include all models and the A8 but not the A8L? I don't know what differences there are but I do not want to get the wrong software.
Can anyone help me with what I can buy for this model to connect to my PC or even a hand held if it works with the A8L?

L just means "Lang" (long body). It nothing to do with diagnostics or electronics.
Most people get a VCDS formerly known as VAGCOM.
It is by a company named Rosstech in USA. You need the HEX-CAN usb version of the cable which also acts as a license key for their software.
If you just want basic OBDII (which is really too basic for a modern car), then check dx.com or ebay any will do as the Audi uses standard shaped OBD plug.

I agree 500%
Get a Bentley manual too when funds permit.
Both will more than pay for themselves in very short order.

Unless you already have one I wouldn't waste my time/cash unless you plan to use it for other vehicles that aren't as advanced.
You'll just be frustrated by the information which is one level up from an "id10t light" IMO.

Thanks for the info. I'll see what I can find with the HEX-Can USB Cable and VCDS Software. You have been a big help, Thanx...

Jakematic: Could you expand on the the Bentley Shop Manual? I have heard references to the A8L and Bentley sharing technology with the aluminum frame and body but did not know how much they have shared in other areas. This is my first Audi and do not know the family line. VW owns Bentley and Audi?

John-

Bentley Publishers puts out an electronic shop manual similar to Hanes, only far far more detailed. Bentley Publishers Home *-* Bentley Publishers - Repair Manuals and Automotive Books
They are available for Audi, Bentley, VW,Porsche, Ford, Jeep, Harley, Merc, etc.

Unfortunately last I knew it only runs on XP, or XP mode under Windows 7.
I run it in an XP virtual machine on my Mac.

VAG owns Audi, VW, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Ducati, Porsche, and a couple European makes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Group
One of the Bentley models (Continental?) is very similar to the A8 and I really noticed it when fueling up next to one once.
They do share a lot of technology and I've heard the A6 has a Lamborghini ashtray LOL.

I don't do much wrenching anymore but the Bentley has been invaluable to me in learning about the vehicle as well as diagnostics to save when going to a dealership for service.

The VCDS is also great for "tweaks" like turning off the seatbelt annoy-o-tron and allowing the windows to open/close with the remote key on top of all the diagnostics. http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Audi_A8/S8_(4E)

VAGCOM Software.

I have ordered a VAGCOM set CD Software & USB to OBDII HEX-CAN connector.
The Bentley Manual is next. I have been looking for tires and possibly new rims or having my factory rims refinished?
