Good write up, probably out of most member's mechanical ability, but worth it if they think they can do it.

my 32v seems to have a similar system, but i can only see one actuator/one flap.. could that be possible ?

Its obviously possible if there is only one visible actuator. I think the old VR motors used one actuator as well to switch between long and short runners.

Yep, the 32V motors have a 2-stage intake manifold with one changeover shaft. Never seen inside the 32V manifold and, like the 40V, Bentley doesn't show the interior.

Here's what the 2-stage manifold changeover looks like in B5 (Audi A4 & VW Passat) 2.8 V6. I think similar to the 32V version...central tube, instead of flaps, that switches from long to short intake runners...same principle and basic operation, though:

Ok, does that 'system' get stuck and need some cleaning up also like the flaps?

Yes it does...it's sluggish and sticks intermittently on my wife's B5 (and have heard the same from some 32V owners)...but haven't been into it yet.
Check it by looking at it with motor off. Don't have a 32V to look at, but as far as I know the pod "should" be inflated and link arm fully extended with motor off and should withdraw fully at idle. Even if it does not normally withdaw at idle, for sure revving from idle to high rpm should change the position fully and back to the other position when returning to idle...don't know the changeover rpm, though...ballpark: should be somewhere from 3500-5000 rpms.
