A8 Valve gasket replacement... just one screw to go

and I can't get to it. This is on a 2003 A8, and the rear/lower T30 bolt on the drivers side is just not easy to get to... anyone have a tool trick or suggestion? Maybe I'm just getting old and my hands hate small spaces...?

That's a fun one, isn't it??? At work I use a T30 bit (the type you put in a magnetic screwdriver) and a ratcheting bit driver. Hard to explain, wish could post a pic of the setup..... The driver is like a thin 1/4" ratchet except it has the 1/4" hex to put the torx (or other) bit into and is held in by a magnet. It's still a b****h to get the bolt out.

P.S. I know what you mean about old(er) hands and small spaces, believe me.

Microdriver!

That makes sense, and I have one somewhere. Thanks. Since you have experience with Audi's, is it common for the paint on valve covers to bubble and flake off, or is this a sign that this car has been run hot?

Yes, it is common for the paint to come off. It isn't an indication the engine has been over hot though. It seems to be a case of paint not sticking to the plastic, excuse me, COMPOSITE MATERIAL ;) very well.

hey

Got to ask though, the Aspen79, is that an indication of a mopar habit... I have a 78 Petty project car, down the list a ways, but it's waiting.

aspen79 08-04-2010 07:17 PM

Yes, I am a Mopar guy who happens to be an Audi tech. 1979 Aspen, 440 (building a stroker 500"), B5 blue etc. Currently undergoing a MAJOR re-do. I call it a "restocustomodification". Bought the car in 1987, 440 went in in 1989. I will NEVER sell this car for any price!

Got the cover off last evening. A tiny 1/4 wrench with the T30 bit superglued into the closed end saved the day (as the bolt got higher my micro rachet got in the way)... so now for one other question: paint removal. Should I opt for media blasting or just good old aircraft remover spray?
