A8 and VW Phaeton ??

Can anyone here tell me how much these two cars share in common? I know cosmeticaly they have differences but are the platforms and components shared between the two models?

I have Experience wrenching on Audis but mainly the A6 line I am looking at a Phaeton the has minor flood issues but given that there are so few of them produced and sold in this country the availability of used parts is of concern. It sure looks to me though that the engine and drivetrain are straight out of the A8.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

It's an odd ball...depends on the year. All of em steel bodies. Some share the same 4.2 V8 (tuned differently) and trans as A8.
The early Phaetons, D1 (but not the same D1 as Audi V8's) shared the platform with Bentley Continentals (VW owned and made)...not Audi's.
Some later ones were called D3's, not same as Audi D3...but are said to share some platform components, but in steel.....plus the 4.2 V8 (trans?).
Also have the W12 option on some.
You have to look a little harder to find info on Phaetons compared to A8's.

P.S. What year Phaeton?

It is an 04 Phaeton

Yea I know what your saying it is hard to find much info on them this one has the 4.2 v8 I would stay away from the w12 as it is just way to rare to be a feasable repair. I will do some more searching but I am just a little uneasy given the low production numbers for this car.

I'm intrigued by em. I rarely see other A8's around here (TN), but I NEVER see a Phaeton.
Lots of articles when you google that model in particular...mixed reviews. Some say a computer on wheels, but everyone seems to love the highway drive.
Look at these specs:

5200 pounds!! Sure weighs like a Bentley...I'll bet it's a smooth highway ride.

I looked at getting a phaeton for months. Test drove one as well. It was a 2004. Completely plagued with problems, from the glove box not opening to simple little annoyances and problems. Plus there's no MMI in the phaeton and the nav system is cd based so it is slower. Comfortable and beautiful, and rare. But definitely not worth the headache the car will cause.
