A8l tranny slips

tranny slips
Hi friends,
i have an A8 2001 and the transmission wont shift into the 3rd gear the 1st and 2nd goes ok but when it gets to the 3rd just slips and the rpm goes high and back into the 2nd,the reverse has been the same for a while but only when it is warm engine, when cold it works perfect and soon as it warms up it just jerks and turns loose ,so dont know if it could be the oil ?? any advice ??

How many miles?
Any leaks apparent?
Ever been serviced? ...like filter or fluid change?
At the very least, may need to check ATF level. In case you're not familiar, it's involved to check level...no dip stick...can only be done from underneath while running (from cold to inintial warm-up), perfectly level and specific temp...dealer or qualified indy mechanic.

A8 tranny slips

thanks silverd2 ,
it has 128 xxx miles on it and i had rebuilt the reverse 11 months ago( not the other gears) and it looks like the mechanic couldn't seal it good so it leaked a tiny bit all the time so i am assuming it may be the oil level or some cheap oil because we didn't really use that car anymore that much i did only 5 thousand miles since then so do you think the reverse could go bad that fast ? and the third and the other gears sometime as well are shaking the car while driving it . any further advice would be helpful. thanks.

As I understand it, the adjustments when replacing reverse components are difficult and critical/precise. If the mechanic couldn't seal the transmission properly (very straight forward task for a knowledgable mechanic), he probably lacked the skills to install/adjust reverse properly...so, unfortunately not surprised at the short life of the repair. Plus, even with a slow leak, over time low ATF will lead to other problems and magnifiy existing ones.
