Default Adding XM to 2004 8L

What is the best way to add XM radio and have it integrated with MMI?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

The MMI already has a wiring harness and data loop in the trunk next to the amp and radio for XM or sirius radio. You just have to buy the factory module (XM or Sirius) and have the dealer activate the system with the scan tool equipment.

Actually, there is no "activation" required by the dealer. You just need the module (from Ebay and others for around $100) and the mounting bracket ($15 from your dealer) and the unit plugs right in beside the NAV DVD drive on the left hand side of the trunk. You, of course, have to activate with XM. The coding in the VAS is only to tell the car that that the XM module is there. It will work fine without that coding but will show faults for an unexpected module when the dealer reads the codes from the car. It's worth doing for that but is not necessary.

You also will want the MMI update. It improves the functionality of the Sat radio tremendously.

Thanks to both of you for replying. How can I tell if my MMI needs updated? What is the current version?

Give the dealer your VIN number and it will pop up on their screen if it has been done before. Chances are it hasn't been done.

You can also check in the MMI. I think you go to the Car Menu, then Software Version. If you have anything less than 33.6.0, you need the update. Tell your dealer that you lose your surround sound settings overnight - that should trigger a TSB that will get you the update and a NAV update if you need it (for free).

If you need a copy of the TSB, email me and I can send it to you.

Hey guys, this is a good thread.

I have an 05 A8L with XM already. How do I get an Audi Sirius unit and make that work for me? Would I need a Dealer update if I'm switching to Sirius?
