Check Lights and oil changes

I just bought a 1999 A8 and I love it. Her name is Pussy Cat. Could someone please tell me about the "Check" lights? I bought the car from a Chevrolet dealership here in Denver. The "check oil light" was on even though they had just done the routine oil change. The mechanics at the dealership could not figure out how to get the light to go off. They called Audi and were told that the 5W 30 oil they routinely use for their oil changes was the wrong weight oil, they said it should be 10W 40 and that may be the reason the light won't go off. They drained all the oil and refilled it with 10W 40. Of course, the light did not go off (seemed silly to me). They ultimately had to take it up the street to Audi to get the light turned off with the puter. Well, now the "Check batterey" light is on. Do I have to take it to a Audi dealer EVERYTIME a light comes on or I have the oil changed?? Please tell me this is not so. What a rip off that would be. I had an Audi 100CS and that was not the case.

Could someone illucidate me please? I love the car. I hope this isn't a short term love affair.
