Driveshaft disconnection on 97 A8?

Hey all- I just bought a 97 A8 on ebay (my first audi, after owning and working on subarus all my life). I regularly tow subarus with a tow dolly, and disconnect the rear driveshaft to prevent damage to the AWD system/transmission. I checked with u-haul, and they are telling me that their computers indicate that I don't have to disconnect the driveshaft to tow an a8 with a dolly, but I kind of want to do it anyway just to be safe. Could someone tell me what is involved in disconnecting the driveshaft from the rear differential? This way, I'll know what to expect when I go to pick up the car (it's about 600 miles away), and I'll know to take the proper tools.

Cheers,

Mike

RE: Driveshaft disconnection on 97 A8?

Uhaul doesnt know what they are talking about. You must disconnect the driveshaft to tow all quatro equiped vehicles. Audi only recommends flatbedding a quattro equiped vehicle. If the vehicle is fwd it doesnt matter. To disconect the driveshaft from the diff you will need to remove the 6 6mm allen bolts. As far as getting the shaft out of the way, youll probably need to remove a bunch of stuff. Posibbly even the entire shaft. Theres heat shilds and exahust that is in the way. Im not sure theres enough space to safely swing the shaft out of the way.
