Talking Fishy gear lube smell....

Recently purchased a 2004 A8L 86k Miles......Timing belt is due I know!!
When I was parked after driving for an hour we noticed a slight hot gear lube smell coming from the Passenger side front wheel area......Any suggestions?
I will soon be in the front end to change out Rotors and pads. I almost wanna say its a CV boot?? purely speculation....
Any help would be appreciated.

If you're smelling CV lube you better park it before you completely chew up an axle.

You mentioned brakes, are you sure it isn't hot, leaky brake-fluid? Power-steering, maybe? Burnt white-lithium has a distinctive smell, but, it is similar to PS fluid smell, I think, which is similar to brake-fluid smell.

Still, cud be CV lube. If the boot fails the lube gets flung ALL OVER the underside. Maybe landed on something hot.

Check for a split boot and, if nothing, check for leaks elsewhere. I think both the PS and brake resevoir are on drivers' side, tho.
