has anyone every replaced their hood latch cable?

there is a really great post from SilverD2 in the quattroworld forum archives that was very very helpful. i used 3/8 bar steel from home depot to push drivers side latch so that got the hood half open. doesnt look like passengerside can be seen from bottom of car, so made hook out of 5/16 threaded bar and a 5/16 threaded clothesline hook joined together with a long nut and yanked hard at cable that was visible at the driverside latch, and that popped the passenger side. so that got the hood open. but then i had to disassemble the wheel well protector panels so i could see how the cable was routed in the fender well. followed it back to the firewall, and found that it was easier to remove the blue air bladders to get better access to the place where it enters the interior at the rubber boot.

cable had broken at the release handle so that it was loose on the interior end. i pulled it out from the firewall end through the rubber boot. but when i when to push the new cable in through the boot, it would only go in about an inch. i took off the knee panel and lower dash panels to get more visibility, but i still cant see the cable anywhere.

has anyone ever replaced the cable? how much do you have to disassemble on the inside to get access to where the cable passes through that firewall boot?

i didnt think to take pictures during the dissassembly, but i can sure take some before i button it up, if i can actually finish the repair.

thanks in advance for any help !!
