Help! Heater fan won't turn on

I have a 1999 A8 quattro with the winter and summer package. My fans don't blow any air anymore as of today, whether I have it on manual or not. It just died on me, I checked all the fuses and they're fine. Normally when I park in the sun the fan would spin slowly to circualte the air, that doesn't even work now. It's cold here in OHIO and I won't survive with just seat warmers. Anyone else have this problem? I just replaced my thermostat, the gage works and the car heats up, the fans just wont kick on. Could it be because the cabinet air filter is finally bad or something? Any help would be appreciated.

Brushes

More than likely your brushes are worn down to the point that they are no longer making contact with the commutator. Earlier this week I replaced mine with some that will do for now. I have sent the OEM brushes out for proper replacements to found by a 3rd party company. Your best bet is to either 1: turn your car on with the fan on high and automatic recirculation off, straiten a coat hanger and lightly push the squirl cage with it and see if it kicks on. If you don't feel like doing that 2: remove the recirculation cover and do the same thing with your hand. If the motor starts to run, you can remove it and smooth out the lands on the brushes and commutator and get a little more life out of what you have. The brushes can be replaced with almost any brush you find at a tool repair shop, but if I were you I would wait until I get a good source of supply for a proper set. I am in the process of a DIY for replacing them. If you have any questions feel free to ask. PS dont listen to the Nay Sayers saying that it can't be done, because it can be.

Couple of links pertainin to this...common problem, which can be repaired sometimes or at worst replace fan/motor:

Repair is commutator is OK:

Removal and/or Replacement:

A little easier access if windshield wiper plastic cowl is removed (Bentley method)...pop wiper arms off (13mm nuts) and cowl is held on with 3 bolts (10mm). Entire cowl can be swung out of the way to passengers side of engine compartment with washer hose/wires still connected.

Appreciate the post to fix the heating fan.

Saved me from getting ripped off by one of the few mechanics familiar with Audi's around the city I live in. Before these posts were made available I likely would have been dinged $500 or more to correct this issue and then told that it is a luxury car and that is what things cost. Thanks again and if I am ever able to offer helpful information such as this I do promise to take the time and effort to post it as you have for me. Cheers.
