First off, let me apologize for the lack of details...I'm trying to help my son make a decision about purchasing an A8. I don't have specifics on engine or tranny...

He test drove it yesterday, and said the car was very nice, smooth ride, etc., but when driving at a consistent speed, he said the RPM's would noticeably jump up a little and then drop down a little. My wife was with him and she actually asked him if he was doing it with the gas, but he wasn't.

The owner said this is a common Audi transmission issue...My question is, is this a serious problem or a common annoyance?

any idea what year a8? the earlier models did suffer from transmission issues, and ultimately failure...not infrequently.

 

I believe it's a '99...I'm just unsure if this is indicative of a transmission failure, or a precursor, or if it's entirely unrelated to the transmission.

I appreciate any insight you may have...

I'd stay FAR away. The older A8's are cheap to buy for a reason. They are NOT cheap to maintain.
