Looking at 99' A8 ...

Hello everyone,

Owned a newer A6, but I'm thinking about an older 1999 A8 now. Found a quattro 4.2L Tiptronic with 40k miles in very good shape for $16,500. Is this a decent price and what kind of maintenance problems can I expect?

Thanks.

Yeah i would say it's a good price! You are looking at a car that someone paid $70,000 for and it only has 40k. You will freak out at the difference between a A6 and the A8. I have a 99 A8 with 67K.

I paid $19,900 for my '99 A8 4.2 Q w/tip, leather, cd-changer, sunroof, power everything, and 46K miles on it, six months ago. I'd say you're looking at a GREAT deal. Still, run a carfax before you get too excited. Ya neva kno.

Sounds like a good deal, but as someone else said, you never know. Although Carfax is a good indicator, there are alot of other things you can check on before buying the car. Here is a link that I used that goes through a check list of ALL of the things you need to check out on a car of this vintage. It will keep you from running up some serious costs after the fact. In particular, make sure that the Belt has been changed, the Brakes have been done, and the CV boots replaced. These can easily add up to over $1000 worth of service and make your good deal not look so good anymore.

I just bought a 98' with 98,000 miles on it. Its in good shape for the vintage, but I did a lot of homework before buying to make sure I DID get a good deal.

GREAT price, was the car factory serviced? Check with Audi and see the records. I have a 98 with 83000 on it and have no mechanical problems at all, a few cosmetic electrical issues. My 01 has 63000 and also drives like new, I had it under warrenty though and did have a fair amount of work done at the last of the coverage. Is the car an East coast car, do you have salt on the raods is the winter. I had rust issues with the brakes on my East coast car. I would feel real comfortable with a 99 with those miles, just keep up on your maintnance. I found that Mobile 1 synthetic made a noticable driveablity differance when I did my first changes when I purchased the cars. Good luck and keep us informed.
