OEM or Aftermarket XENON HID?
I'm soliciting opinions, long before I lay out any actual ca$h. I want to go HID on my recently purchased '99 A8 4.2Q. My biggest question is if anybody knows how many of the bulbs in an OEM headlamp assy are actually Xenon? Low? High? Fog? I want to HID the whole assy, so IF I go Aftermarket I'm looking at about $1200-$1500 U$D. The OEM assy's list for something like $1100.00 each, but I do not know if the entire set of lights is HID in an OEM assy. I figure the OEM units will involve less underhood mods, too, but I'm not losing any sleep over that. Whichever one does what I want most ably is what Im interested in... Any thoughts folks?
Halogens, now. I use my highs fairly frequently... Mornings, on the way to work (I'm out before sunup fall and winter), plus I make a multi-state road trip to visit my children every other month, or so. More often if I have a l'il extra $$ to blow. That trip is, nine times outta ten, done at night when the traffic is lowest.
I hope you don't take this wrong Jest, but, really what diff does it make how often? I want what I want. Just wanted to know if anybody had an easy answer about whether or not the OEM light assy was all HID, or not. (remind me to tell you, one of these days, about the assinine questions I got when I went shopping for some V-rated tires for my Camry...)

So, nobody has access to a working front headlight assy for a '98-'99 A8? Jeez. FINE, I guess I'll have to go find an Audi Stealership and go look for myself. I'll report my findings, for the general edification of the boards, once I have scraped together the time to go visit my local Audi stealers lot... TFN.
Sorry, I didn't see you had replied. I'm pretty sure the oem headlights are not going to be xenon for those years. Most people don't use their highbeams very much so putting xenon in them would be frivolous. Sorry I forgot you drive an A8.
From what I've been told, and seen in an OEM parts catalogue, you can actually order a Xenon headlight assy for those years. Costs a little over 1100-1200.00, U$D, per assy. I was wondering if anybody knew if that OEM assy was Xenon for High, Low, and Fog, or just for low beam. Looks like I'll have to run down the info myself. No biggie... Just hard finding the time. I've got a pretty full schedule, lately. FTR, kits to Xenon-up the three lights in the non-Xenon assy I have will run approx. $1300.00 U$D, aftermarket.
Thanks Gapa,
When I free up sum chedda I'm gonna hit some of teh online Audi stripyards and see if they have the HID components for teh D2 bodystyle. If not, I've got the replacement part numbers. Muny-wise, my expense would be almost equal, with either route. So I'd rather go with OEM parts rathner than an aftermarket reach-around.
In teh off chance you wrap it around a tree (not wishing you any bad luck, mind you, I'm just sayin... IF!!!), think of me before you let them haul it away. I'll pay fair market price...
