Quiet Ties, please advice
 

For about a year ago I put a new set of High performance Summer tires on my A8. I decided to buy the "Yokohama S-Drive", especially after reading all those good reviews in Tire rack. Well, the first 10K miles were fine but now those tires are getting really noisy! that really defeats the purpose of driving such a luxury automobile. I was wondering if any of you has any advice for a very quiet tire for A8. Where I live there is not much of snow or ice, but a few weeks of rain.
In the past I had Michelin Pilot Sport A/S and also Pilot Sport SP2 on my Bimmers, excellent tires, but not very longlasting and very expensive!

I am currently running general altimax HPs on all 4. They're very smooth and practically silent. Where I live there's plenty of snow and they're pretty decent with that, but also a great dry/wet tire, and not too badly priced at around $150 a piece fitted. I have 40k on them now and they're probably about half worn. I plan to buy them again.

Well for quietness you should look for a tread that has at least some rubber on the ground all the way around. It's gaps in the tread that make noise. Directional treads are usually good for this, like these:

Looks like with that tire size you're not getting out of it cheaply!

As you know, Michelin consistently ranks high in "ride and noise comfort" on TireRack, et al, surveys.

Really? That surprises me, they look like a very smooth quiet tread. Try visiting tirerack.com or a similar site and checking out the reviews, that's what I would do.

Well, I guess Loudness is more or less a subjective issue. I have very sensitive ears and even a samll radling in the car bothers me, so I don't know how helpful those reviews in Tire Rack might be, plus there not many reviews there about A8L, maybe because there are not many out there? I thought in general grand touring tires are more quiet than summer or all season tires?!

Well if you look at the surveys section like this one:

The numbers are based on over 3000 reviews reporting over 26 million miles, so they can't be completely worthless. If you check those for the best noise rating, chances are you'll find the quietest tire.
