Ready to buy 1998-2000 A8 or A6
Is there anything I need to know or look out for. This will be my first Audi and I want to make a good selection. I prefer the A8 but haven't found many. A6's are all over the place.
I would really appreciate any comments. |
Two completely different animals. Although some A6's share the same drive train (kind of) as A8's, they are totally unrelated in feel and construction.
You REALLY need to test drive at least one of each to decide your priorities. A8's are simply rarer (more limited production, all aluminum) and a couple of steps above A6's...quite unique. I personally do not like the feel of ANY A6 I've driven...love the A8. Here's a few recent threads discussing mostly A8's: https://www.audiforums.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=153474 https://www.audiforums.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=153973 https://www.audiforums.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=112161 |
P.S. If you go A8, the 2000 and newer have the updated engines...40 valves, 3 stage intake, etc....and easier to do a timing belt change on.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I've always been partial to the A8, unforutnately they are hard to find where I live (Philly PA). With any luck I will find one. Hopefully the maintenance cost won't be that bad.

Hey Audi Nemesis,
I am outside of Philly in Bucks County, and I agree the A8 is pretty scarce, it's worth it over the A6, in my opinion. I haven't bought yet, but am poking around, and there are few, but you gotta be willing to go in a 100 mile radius from Philly. Don't do A6, you'll regret it when you see an 8 on the road.. :) |
When I bought my '01 A8, I had the advantage of looking for a 3-4 year old CPO. So I did a nationwide search...none anywhere near me...had to drive well out my area just to test drive a couple. Even my local Audi dealer had NEVER had one on the lot...ever! I live in Ford/GM country...TN.
I was lookin for a silver/black SWB with low miles...and found it. Bought it from a Chicago dealer over the phone (good price) and had it shipped to my door, with 2.5 years of Audi warranty left. 6 years and 65K miles later, still my daily driver. |
