Rear Differential 2004 Audi A8L

I have a 2004 A8L, just found out I need to replace my rear differential, but I really do not want to pay $2600.00 for the part from Audi.

Does anyone know of a place I may purchase a remanufactured, or a low mile used one? Thanks for the info.

Did they say why you need to replace it? NOT COMMON...those are generally bullet-proof. Don't know that I've EVER heard of one failing to the point of replacement(?) Symptoms?

The independent Audi/VW shop i took it to in Atlanta tried everything to diagnose but could not, had bearings replaced etc inspected all the cv joints and drive axle, and he had to end up taking it to AUDI therefore found that it needed to be replaced, I was shocked that at 99k miles on a once $90k car a part of that caliber would wear out like that.

Symptoms are a grinding growl noise when turning at low speeds, upon acceleration it vibrates the smoothes out until you put more pull on it and when you let of the accelerator it stop vibrating completley.

It's just so annoying especially that I know that this is such a smooth car.

My rear diff on a '05 A8L has been making a loud noise for a while (I guess). I had been assuming it was the Cooper tires on the car, today, took some guys to lunch in it, one of them being a mechanic, who says, "what's wrong with your pinion bearing?" Any thoughts on that? Does anyone have any pics of how to check/change the fluid? I broke down today and ordered a Bently service manual CD from ECS.

I jacked my car up, was feeling around, found a site that showed servicing an A4 requiring 10mm Hex socket, and want to confirm with anyone who's checked in the past. My growling noise, I hope goes away after treating with some Friction Modifier.

Any thoughts on this? Sorry about the OP and having to replace, I'm hoping I don't end up going down the same road.

i forgot to update about the rear differential. after wasting over $1400 in figuring out what was wrong, I replaced with a 41k mile diff, did not fix the problem. i am happy to report that the problem was the tires i had on the back.

Turns out I had put wider tires on the back and apparently the tires were much taller than the front and the Quattro system could not recognize, thereofre the car went haywire. Well, a soon as i put my old tires back on, the problem went away.
