Source for rebuild or replacement transmissions

I have a 2000 A8 and like most my transmission went out. I have the transmission out and I'm now looking for a good reputable and cost effective place to buy an exchange transmission or send my transmission out to be gone through..

The faults in the transmission were incorrect gear ratio and it was slipping..

Search Transtar, they make re-build kits for everything. If you want a used trans (not recommended on a D2 A8) www.shokan.com might have one.

i don't want to go with a used transmission...

and if i rebuild it i wouldn't want anything but ZF parts...

Not endorsing tis site. Just happened to run across it while searching for rebuilt motors for a friend, a while ago and bookmarked it:

Good luck!

I had to buy a rebuilt ZF from Kirt Koller. He sells 'em on eBay. Guaranteed for 1 year. Mine has worked fine. Google the name and you'll see that BMW drivers think highly of his ZF expertise, too.

Good luck.

my friend and I just rebuilt my 5hp24 tranny with all parts from ZF. now its shifts like a dream.
I would not ogo with used one. Go with what you have and makeit new a gain. you wont regret it.

if you need parts for this transmission, I would be able to supply the ZF5HP24 A-Clutch drum (forward drum) if that is the problem.

My father owns a transmission parts rebuilding company and I am aware of a few reputable suppliers of rebuilt ZF transmissions. Try the following places:
Autosports Unlimited 800-624-3876 (authorized ZF distributor)
European Exchange 201-489-7770
MZF-Bayer, Inc. 800-372-8726

hope that helps!

So you've plugged this A-clutch drum twice here already. Is this what most commonly goes wrong? Also, as a more general question, I have a 2001 A8 40 valve with no transmission problems currently. Can I keep it this way by maintaining the fluid and regular servicing, or is the transmission gremlin inevitable on these things?

transpartstech_Audi 03-03-2010 08:26 AM

Yes, the A-clutch drum constantly goes bad on these units. And the thing is that ZF is not manufacturing these drums anymore; so finding original OEM drums is not possible. Our company has mad it possible to supply this drum, remanufactured and reinforced, and we've seen a high demand.

The best thing you can do is yes, maintain the service as suggested by the manufacturer. Otherwise, due to the fact that the ZF5HP24 has this chronic problem of losing this drum, hope for the best. It's not inevitable. But if you're an aggressive driver, you'll put a lot of strain on the transmission.

Regards!
