Transmission fix on a3.7 2002 A8?

Hi Everyone,

Roughly how much would it cost in GBP to have the transmission fixed (replaced with a recon) on a 3.7 52plate Audi A8?

Thanks

Neil

Anyone?

You probably won't be able to find anyone that re-builds those transmissions, your best bet would be to purchase a re-manned unit at the dealer that usually comes from germany, or ZF which is the manufacture.

So it wouldn't be a feasible solution to finding an Audi?

I would much prefer an S8 to an A8, but was pretty tempted by the one below until I noticed where it said that it had transmission problems. Would everyone agree it would be best to walk away and carry on looking for that elusive "right" car?

I believe the Dealer is having trouble shifting this motor because of its issues. thats the impression I got from someone who works there when I called. I wondered if It would be a worth while purchase If I managed to get it for the £2k mark then have it repaired, it would however seem that this would be a very expensive course of action?

Can anyone recommend what to look for when buying a used Audi A/S8?
Thanks in advance!

Don't buy any A8 that has current transmission problems, don't buy the 3.7 V8 either, look for the 4.2L. An S8 has the same transmission and engine, but the engine has a few tweaks to make more horsepower and the suspension is a littler stiffer.
Just make sure when you buy an A/S 8 that you test drive it and make sure it pulls good, doesn't have any strange noises, upshifts good, as well as reverse.

Thanks auditech79 will do. Is there any little tests in particular to tell if the tranny is on the way out? I know there is the test of booting it to down shift but that doesn't go down to well on test drives as I can imagine it would get you labeled a test pilot! I will take your advice and my inital thought and run away from that Audi with tranny trouble. I also agree, i would much rather have the S8 to an A8. My feelings are if I am going to buy one I might as well spend a little extra and get the car I adore rather than always be wishing I had something a little better and never truly loving the car I had spent all that money on!

I really like the idea of an S8 now I am old enough to get insured on one. I truly love the look of this S8 I have seen on another Audi forum: http://uk-audis.net/forums/t/662.aspx
It seems a little different to others I have seen? NEVER seen it in the gorgeous dark Grey before and the rear seems to have a little lip that I also haven't seen before. Unfortunately I cant seem to get registered on this forum to quiz the owner on it :( Has anyone seen any of this colour for sale? If so please please let me know! Its absolutely stunning!

Does this Audi look like it is worth £6k? I would have thought the price tag should have been more like the £4k mark or is that wishful thinking?

Well thats about 9 grand in US currency which would be a damn steal out here! But i don't know how the currency varies from the UK to the US. I would say that thats an awesome deal. I have seen the dark grey S8 cars here in the US so they should have them there. As for the rear bumper it looks like he just cut out another hole for an extra set of pipes and had them coated with paint to match the car which is common out here.
Just to give you an idea of what an S8 of that caliber will fetch over here, it would be around $15,000 if i wanted to buy that car so take that with a grain of salt.

I dont think its a common colour here in the UK. I am sure I haven't seen an A/S8 in that colour before. I have seen other Audis in that colour thought.

The lip I was referring to was the one on the top of the boot. There seems to be a slight lip. It might be the camera angle / Shadows creating an elution of a lip but it does seem to have a slight smoothed in rolled edge on top of the boot.
