Trouble shooting auto leveling H.L.

2003 audi s8. Any pointer on locating the problem. Light is on , on the dash. I see there are sensors on the lt front and lt rear control arms are they for the self levelers? also if i repair the problem will the light on the dash go out or is this a stored code? Thanks for any help.

Front and rear suspension units with plastic arms attached to "switches" (left side of car only) are indeed the leveling sensors. The send signals to the leveling motors in the headlight housings.
Never had a problem with em, so not sure about the warning light...BUT other fault codes (esp ones that trip CEL) will clear after 1 or 2 (depending on fault) driving cycles with correction, but are stored in the fault memory, retrievable (and erasable) with a code reader or Vagcom.

We would need the codes from a vag com on that one, the headlight control module can trigger a light from faulty sensors, wiring, ignitors, (ballasts) bulbs, or even the headlight motors themselves. You would need a vag com to clear these faults as well.

I have had the headlights out to do some work on the car. I know it was working before, could everything be working and a code came up because of the lights were out of the car. Is it possible the code just needs to be cleared? I have checked all wiring , all looks good. The car only has 70,000 mi on it, i wouldn't think the sensors would be bad. also the battery was out for a while. If it was scanned would it pin point the problem? or is it a generic code as headlight fault? I work on cars for a living so trouble shooting is not a problem for me , BUT without the proper scan tools for this i am left in the dark!

Vagcom scan (not a generic code reader) would likely pinpoint the problem specifically and/or erase the code, if no problem still exists.

Thanks for all the help. Ill let you know how i make out. thanks again. mike

A generic scan tool can't access the CAN bus, so it won't read most of the modules besides the engine, and drivetrain. However i have seen headlight motors get stuck sometimes which will trigger the light, sometimes erasing the fault is all you need, of course you need a vag com to do that.

Thanks, Ill let you know how i make out after vag com.
