Wanna hear an outrageous stealer story?

Went to the stealer today to do my oil change. Partly because I had my mechanic do all of the 55k maintenance including parts for only $140, except for the oil change.
Dealer charged me $202 for an oil change! Only the oil change including new oil filter and oil and labor. I've never been so shocked and outraged in my life. So if anyone has a way or guide to change the oil so I can just tell my mechanic to do it next time let me know. And I'll just have the stealer reset the service reminder.
Thanks
and WOW.

That's kinda pricey, but when you consider that you only need to do it every 10k miles it eases the pain a little. For how-to articles I recommend http://audidiy.com/a8.html, just make sure you have all the necessary parts up front if you don't have a conveniently located Audi parts dealer.

What kind of mechanic DOESN'T KNOW how-to do an oil change? A 10-year-old could do it!

Brozee 10-14-2009 07:41 PM

Lol its not that he couldn't do it, but I heard that the oil change on the A8 was very hard? I heard you have to remove the air filter housing to get to it? Is this true?

I seriously doubt it. Even if you have to, so what? Just take it off - a few clips/bolts and it's lying on the driveway.

As fir a ten year old doing it, actually but for the arm strength to remove the filter and drain bolt, my five year old son can (and with me there, does) do oil changes on my A4 lol - he gets pissed if I don't let him do it.

All seriousness though, just look in the engine bay and you'll find the filter. The whole thing is 15-20 minutes and a lot less than $200.

Very nice I'll just do it myself next time. Only hard thing is finding someone with a vag-com to reset it. And I have no clue how much the dealer would charge just to reset it (out of warranty 60k) But I love the picture of your audi looks great!

Thank you, although now that it's lowered I need to reshoot the picture.

The service reminder should be resettable without VagCom. Your owners manual likely has the procedure. In the A4 it involves holding down one cluster stalk while pulling out the other. Someone may even have the procedure here, or on www.audiworld.com in the Tech area, or at www.audidiy.com.

If you have a laptop computer, download Vag from www.Ross-tech.com for free, and buy the OBD2 cable off eBay for $20 and you'll have the capability at home.

Really, thats great I might just do that then. Although, I have a D3 Audi a8. Its a 2005 model would this still use the OBD2 cable? Mind pointing me to a link of the exact one I looked on ebay and found numerous different ones?
Thanks alot!

I'll give you a break down on how to do an oil change on a D3 A8.
First remove the belly pan.
Un-hook the secondary air line from the air box.
Pop the hood and disconnect the hose from the MAF sensor.
Un-bolt the MAF sensor and pull it out of the way.
Un-bolt the air box using a T25 torx socket and a very long 1/4 extension.
Pull the air box out and out of the way.
The oil filter is against the block.
Now there is a trick to doing this on an 04 model, there is a steel pipe directly over the oil filter housing that will prohibit you from getting the filter out. There is a TSB at the dealer for removing the pipe and putting in a rubber one. (extremely hard and techs won't do it) What we do is grab a pry bar and just bend it enough to get the filter out, if you bend it too far you may break a pipe which will require removing of the engine to fix.
Other than that its pretty easy.

As for the cable, buy it from www.ross-tech.com, Ebay cables never work on the D3 A8 because of the fiber optic data loop/CAN bus system. I would call ross tech personally and get the correct cable.
