Will 1997 A4 transmission fit in 1997 a8 ?

Hi

Can a 1997 A4 quattro 1.8t 5speed auto transmission replace a 1997 A8 quattro 4.2l 5speed auto ?

If not... any major modifications for it to fit ?

thanks

I have a hard time imagining that they're even close. Maybe someone who knows more will prove me wrong, and maybe Audi engineers are that crazy, but in my mind a transmission for a 1.8 liter 4 cylinder and a transmission for a 4.2 liter V8 would be worlds apart. I just did a quick search and they don't even look anything alike.

No, but a 4.2L A6 or RS6 transmission would.

One major modification that would work: Jack up the sunroof on the A8 and pull an A4 or a base A6 under it, BUT I'm not sure that the sunroofs are interchangeable :)

As they said ...the 2 transmissions are not even related, except by manufacturer. They are completely different sizes, shapes, lengths, internal controls, external electronic control...you name it.

Only the same model trans is a possible replacement, unless you want to spend the entire value of the car (or more) to convert to a Euro S8 manual box.

Rebuild the faulty one or replace it with a rebuilt identical trans....or part out the remainder of the car....sorry.
