I just purchased a 2000 1.8 TT with 54k miles. Within 40 miles of driving the car, the manual transmission broke down.

According to the dealer, the pressure plate hit the flywheel and it was the second case they heard of in the last 3 weeks.

Is this something common in TT manual transmissions, or is this a case of abuse by the previous owner?

The pressure plate would have to go through the clutch disk to hit the FW, that doesnt make sense to me. But if its the clutch and related parts, it can easily be fixed and is due to bad driving skills by the previous owner. I would take it back to the place you got it and make them cover the damages. Now would be a good time to install a ecstuning.com stage 1 kit and lightweight fw.

 

dont do ECS Stage 1... I've had mine for 15k mi and my recent Unitronic upgrade has caused my clutch to start slipping again! Go big or GO HOME.

 

The stg1 kit has held people running pretty big size turbos, a gt35r being one of them... 02VW1.8t

 

That's what I thought. I come from a Ducati background and applying the same principle of pressure plate to flywheel location, the plate would have to go directly through the frictions disks.

In any event, the delaership is replacing the entire clutch. I was just unsure if this was a "TT" only situation.

i would take it somewhere else unless its coverd by warrenty. You should be able to get something better for less if they are charging you.

Seriously though it says on ECS that stage I kit is meant to take 275lbs of torque...are they lowballing the estimate?

 

probably not. But it has helda long time for some people. Still wouldnt be my choice with BT plans.

 

No there's no charge. The company is paying for it as it was under warranty and the part they claimed caused the problem are mentioned in their declaration of covered parts.

I'm just glad it happened now than later and I'm starting with a new slate!

my clutch does get a lot of work due to stop and go traffic every damn day of my life.

but I dont think I drive it like an ahole.
