2001 audi tt -should I?

You guys have an amazing and informative forum. Here is my situation and I need your help:

I would like to have your insight if I should buy a 2001 audi tt quattro 6-speed with 120,000 miles.
Current owner claims that timing belt had been changed - no proof though - I am feeling that I should go with his word on that as the car would probably not be running right now....Oil pan and tide rod end was also changed by him recently. As always said car has no problems, mechanically excellent etc etc.
My concerns:
previously than him 4 owners - 1 is supposed to be family
No service records
what might come up and what cost should I expect? I have an indy mechanic with cheaper labor but again...
Overall, would that be a good buy for 5.5k?As any potential buyer who has always loved the particular car (haven't slept past 2 days thinking about it) I would like to hear go for it but I would appreciate more honest opinions.Thank you in advance

can you call the shop that did the timing belt change out and confirm the service?
Have you pulled a CARFAX report?
I'm picking up my 2005 TT on Saturday. It has 110K miles. I called the local Audi dealer before the purchase and visited with them about past service. Gave them the VIN and they looked it up and told the past service history. I'm buying it from a Bank that took it back on a loan, so had no service records other than what the CarFax report told me.
