I think so. just the fact that the material is harder (brass/rubber) Makes it a more "positive" shift. Yeah no more play, but the stops are more abrupt as a result. (get where im coming from?) In my experience, the only way to get rid of all the issues in the shifter is to cover both ends. the trans side of the linkage is only 1 weak point(source of play/issues). the shifter itself is the other end. I think the shifter tends to be a huge part of the problem in older cars with a ton of miles.
I've been told that with some manufacturers that this issue can be resolved by replacing the manual transmission fluid with ATF. At least with BMWs this is an approved method. Does anybody know if this method is approved with VWs/Audis as well? My friend has a 2000 Audi TT 1.8T with a 5 speed manual gearbox and it's also experiencing notchey shifts. Here's the VIN if that's helpful at all...
