Default Blower Motor Replacement

Ok, this is the deal. I have a 2000 TT and it's blower motor behind the dash decided to die. Unfortunately I live in SF Bay area and everything is very expensive, especially if you own an Audi. So the question is:
1) Has anyone replace one of these motors by themselves (ie-at home)
2) How painstaking is it? I've heard you can access the motor w/o removing the dash; others say you need to?
3)The part goes for about 125 but the cheapest quote I've received from any shop is 450? Is it really that labor intensive or are these guys taking advantage of a girl~

If anyone has any great ideas, fill me in. Better yet, if your in the Bay area and you "know people", lets chat.

Happy Motoring (maybe I'll see you at the 1/2 day R8 drive in December in Sonoma)

they reason its 450 is cause labor is ~75-100 perhour... so after math its like ~3 hour job for a mechanic, so it would take you a little more if your unfamiliar
