Can I Use an Oil Extractor on the Audi TT?
 

I would like to change the oil on my 2001 Audi TT. I live 120 miles from the closest dealer so taking the car there is not an option. I don't have low profile ramps either.

Will an oil extractor like the Pela extractor work? I've had good luck with this on other cars, no need to get under the car and no mess. The main restrictions on the Pela extractor is the fit of the extractor tube into the dip stick tube. If not the Pela extractor does anyone have experience with other extractors?

What type of oil filters are most people using?

I don't know much about an "oil extractor", but would hesitate to use anything that works by fitting into an Audi plastic dip stick tube. They break easily without any effort as is.
Draining your oil is no big deal. Just be sure to replace the drain plug washer if re-using your stock plug.

I use Meyle filters.
I too agree that you should not use an oil extractor...just drain it. Do not put the oil drain pan under the plug...the oil shoots out horizontally due to the pressure.
I use Rhino ramps and the car does not rub...love em.

I would use the extractor. It saves time, and mess. I would measure how much is coming out of there tho. Just so you know your getting all of it. I would be careful with the dipstick tube, but being careful you should be fine. I use the K&N screw on fiters. They have the nut on the bottom of the case. makes them easier to get off.

Thanks so much for the info. I know those dip stick tubes can be a problem; I've experienced that on a VW Jetta. I'll get the K & N filter. I like the idea of the nut on the bottom.

Wouldn't you need to jack up the car to get the filter off anyway? Why not just drain the oil while your under it?

I thought you access the filter from inside the engine compartment like you do on the A4? Am I wrong?

No you gotta jack the car up to get the filter off. On a 225 atleast. The filter is a real PITA to get off too. You got to pull it through some hoses and other crap in the way.

Concurr - the car has to go up anyway and it is no big deal to drain the oil, except for all the crap to take off for access.
