Well I was at the autoparts store the other day actually looking for the redline mt tranny oil. Could not find it then I let the guy behind the counter talk me into using the Valvoline Dura Lube synthetic blend. brand 75/90 gear oil it is gl5 rated. then I looked around here and saw nobody had used it. I had already changed the fluid, it came out sorta foamy. and had that distinct gear lube smell. also drained the bevel box and cleaned the magnetic plug. now I'm wondering if this is ok or not, I have driven it for approx, 50-75 miles and dont notice anything different.. You know that hindsight is always 20/20. thanks for any input. I should have waited and ordered the redline, but you know how it is when you are on a mission, should i be ok? should i run it for a little while as a flush? or keep it in ? or change imediatly? thanks Wayne

Well,

Hmm, we are told to run GL-4, but full synthetic in that weight is good to go. I don't know the difference between the GL-4 and GL-5 so I don't know for sure. Logic would lead you to think it's better, but I know that certain Syncro's in tranny's don't agree with certaing GL ratings, ie, my last GTI had copper syncro's, and you couldn't run GL-5, this leads me to believe that since our trannies are still based off of the O2 design, it might not be good for you.

Any normal Synthetic GL-4 would work fine for you, just as good as Redline arguably, however, you have a GL-5, there's the delimma, not the wieght of the oil, it's fine, as well as being Synthetic. SoOOOoo, is GL-5 acceptable by our Trannies? Read your manual really quick and it will tell you, I haven't read yet except to find out we need GL-4, so I might run Royal Purple Syncromesh as it's local over here, but I questions the GL-5.

Hope this helps, it answered some of yoru questions. Here's another, are you a 180 or a 6-Speed 225, because my answers were catered towards the 5-Speed 180, it may be GL-5 for the 225.
