Default Check Engine light

So my check engine light came on tonight...I checked the gas cap, and that was on properly. It is not running rough, so I eliminated the thoughts of an ignition coil that went bad...which leads into my next question...what the hell threw the code?? I do know it could be any number of things, and I went to Auto Zone to have them check it, but here in Cali I would have to rent the vagcom for 163 dollars to check it myself. I said no way!! So the guy who works there is gonna check it for me tomorrow.

Does anyone have ANY idea as to what it might be?? I know thats probably a tough question to answer...but I don't know what couldve caused it.

Thanks,

Jeremy~

Without any codes your guess is as good as anyones. There is no way of knowing without hooking it up. We could all guess ourselves to death and still not
come up with what actually caused it. Have it scanned and see what the codes are then we will see

My guess is that it's a coolant temp/level code!

Autozone sells these little OBD-ll scanners for close to $80.
That's what I bought to hold me over until purchasing a VAG cable and software.
It fits perfectly in the glove box...

When I bought my stuff I didn't have this option available to me, but you might want to consider one of these:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/CAN-B...spagenameZWDVW

Ecs tuning sells the same thing but they're out of stock right now. This is assuming you don't have a laptop anddon't want to drop the cash on avag-com :-)

I order the cable from ebay for $10 and run the vag-com software (not registered), which allow me to get the error code.

SoI pulled this code: P2181, which is the engine cooling system performance. I checked the coolant...everything was fine there and the car doesnt seem to be overheating, so I ruled out a radiator problem. Could it be a water pump issue?? What else could it be?

Guess I need to take it somewhere then....ugh, do the problems ever stop??
