Default Ebrake issues

Today I did a rear bake job, pads and rotors. I never disconnected the emergency break or brake lines during the job. After I got in the car to pump the brakes to check them when I pulled up on the emergency brake it didn't engage, the release button is constantly pushed in. When I pull up on the brake handle the brakes do work, it just won't lock in the up position, any ideas?

One night after coming home from work I parked in the driveway and engaged the E-brake as usual. Gathered my things, opened the door, got a foot on the ground and heard a loud POP. Sounded like a gun shot, but it wasn't. It was just the silver button from my E-brake lever flying off and ricocheting around. It bounced off the radio cover landing in the backseat ultimately disengaging the E-brake.

Anyway my point is if the button can fly off, I would not be surprized if it could become stuck. Worth investigating in my opinion.
