I'm planning on purchasing a TT 2000 - 2004 and I was wondering if someone could tell me some average monthly costs for this car as well as common problems.

Since spending about $2500 in parts (and mostly my own labor) initially after buying it used, I haven't spent anything except gas and oil. That was a year ago. Still runs great.
Common problems? They're all over the boards here if you want to do a little research.

 

It depends on the year, mileage, and type of engine: 1.8 Turbo, or 3.2 V6.
Also it depends on if the particular TT has Quattro (4 Wheel Drive) or does not have it.

 

I have a 2004 tt roadster that I spent $1500 on in minor repairs when I first bought it a year ago. I haven't had anything done on it since then. But I'm getting a warning that it wants service in about 500 miles, so I'll get something done soon.
