Default Howling Noise on Startup and After Ignition off

Coming from engine compartment.
About 4 secs on startup and shutdown...sounds like a belt rubbing or something. Any ideas?

Not a belt but most likely the secondary airpump. It can be accessed by removing the cowl underneath the car, it's on the passenger side, front of engine. There should be two hoses going to it. One leads from the airbox if you can't locate it by looks. Very common issue which may lead to replacing the unit.

Thanks Mobius. I am a DIYer so any idea on the cost for the part?

Also, just wondering if the SAI pump would cause it to howl AFTER the ignition is off as in my case.

Yes it does last after the car is started. I am unclear on the costs of the unit itself. Run a quick search I beleive others were looking at getting theirs replaced after the problem got worse. I've been under there messing with it after breaking the hoses working on something else. Def...looks like a DIY.

It is a DIY.....I took mine out due to the same exact thing your talking about. The rivets came out or were almost busted so mine was howling away. I popped the rest of the rivets out and then put in some new bolts with nuts, washers, etc. Put it back in and much much MUCH better now! Super quiet and no howling sound. Total cost was $1.57 and then factor in your time......took me about 3 hours to get it out due to finding "other" things to mess with, clean up, look at, etc.

Try to fix it yourself and if that doesnt work then spend the big bucks on a new one.

Cheers,

Popped rivets is a VERY common problem.

4mymalamute, do u recall what size bolts you purchased? I'd like to have the hardware before starting the work, preferably.

Off the top of my head I think they were 10x24 by 2 or 2.5 inches long. Dont hold me to that though. You will want to get flat washers as well as lock washers and lock nuts..........this way you wont have to worry about it coming lose again.

The hardest part for me was getting the hex bolts off the support bracket (I have big hands) due to they were behind some stuff. Other than that, its really simple, just give yourself some time to get it done.

Good luck,
Chans

Got it off. Sure enough, 4 of the rivets were sheared off.

Hardest part by far was access to the hex bolts holding the mount on, especially since they are torqued so tight. Total PITA.

Off to the hardware store. I'm just gonna take the whole part into the store...thanks for everyone's help.

Glad to hear you got it taken care of. Not a bad job but your right, those damn hex bolts suck to get off due to being so dang tight. Let us know how it sounds when you get it all back together.
