Default Idle issue

Hi, my idle is sitting at like 800 rpm and then it drops to like 500 rpm then shoots up to about 1300 rpm then back down to 800 rpm. From what I've read here it sounds like the MAF. I tried cleaning it and that seemed to fix it for a few days. But now its back not too long later. Do you think it is the MAF and that it needs to be replaced? How much do they typically run?

Thanks!

prob the maf. Try to unplug it and see if it makes a difference. They are around $120 to replace. They have an extended warranty untill 7 years/70k miles though. Also- sometimes you can clean it. Do a search for more details.

Sounds like a vacuum leak. Check your hoses for cracks or looseness. If it does it over and over in the span of a few seconds it would sound like a classic case ofvacuum leak. MAF problems would give studdering issues all over the rpm range.

we should start exporting faulty MAF's to users with low mileage cars. lol. ;-)

i cant believe how often these darn things fail. something about that situation isnt right.

My 04 is still going strong on the same MAF after 55k miles. Maybe everyone is just blaming all their problems on a faulty MAF where it could just be a simple (or not so simple in case of the TT)
vacuum leak.

i knew nothing about cars when i bought mine.

i've already replaced (on my own) the timing belt, t-stat, water pump, o2 sensors, spark plugs, coil packs, maf, coolant temp sensor, 2 o2 sensors, added a boost gauge, added an mbc, and countless other things. this car makes me learn cars. lol.
