Which instrument cluster do I need?
I'm buying this Audi on Friday, February 3rd and it's having the "Instrument Cluster Problem" the speedometer and tachometer are extremely inaccurate. I find A TON of instrument clusters online for purchase but they all say like 8 different options
I can obviously tell if it's with or without info display but what about the VIN through 050000 and through 050001 My VIN ends in 1009949. It's a 2000 Audi TT 1.8L Turbo FWD. Which one would I use as a replacement? |
bump? :(

Unlike most cars, you can't just swap a junk yard or even brand new OEM cluster in. The car won't start unless an audi dealer programs the cluster to your vin. If you need to replace the cluster, it must be done by an audi dealer or someone who has access to the programming equipment (virtually only audi dealer mechanics). 95% of non-dealer repair garages are not able to program the new cluster. The security ensures it's difficult to roll back the odometer.
The only non-dealer option is to repair your current cluster. Some parts are repairable and some are not. I'm not sure if a broken tach is repairable, but I know the temp and gas gauges are. Theres some places you can mail the cluster to and they repair them.... I suspect they solder in parts from junk yard clusters. I had my cluster replaced at a audi dealer. I think it was around $900. The repair route (if available) is $250, but you need to remove and reinstall the cluster yourself. Hope this helps. |
I also don't think I've heard of an inaccurate speedometer from a bad cluster, but I'm sure it could occur. Who the hell won't look into fixing a speedometer? I bet the seller did, found out how much it was and decided to just sell the car. I would be leary this car has other hidden issues.
FYI- Not all trouble codes turn on the check engine light. I would check the car for codes. You need an VAG-COM enabled reader to do this though, OBD-II won't help unless the check engine light is already on. |
buy the car, go to modulemasters web site, for info repair, i will be getting my new! 01 TT done soon. they state disconnect battery at least 10 min then show how to remove cluster and mail for repair, $350 for the display, returning your orig cluster there are no coding issues
