Default K&N and MAF!?

Hey Guys, I have heard, and it seems possible that the oil used in a "recharging" a K&N filter can foul the MAF. Have any of you had any experience with this? My last MAF went bad pretty soon after I oiled my last K&N on my S4 coincidence or not?. My TT need a cleaning and are weighing the options of cleaning vs replacing with a dry filter. Let me know you thoughts and experiences with filter cleaning. Thanks!

yes, the oil will coat the maf elements, raising the temperature & causing the ecu to think there is less air flow & lean out the a/f ratio.

CRC maf cleaner FTW.

Thanks Danzan, so you think clean/oil it. wait a bit then clean the MAF? would cleaning it be a permanent solution or does it only buy time with the MAF? What I am asking is, does the oil permantly damage the MAF or is it good as before after it is clean off? Thanks!

the oil does not permanently damage the maf, but it results in false air flow readings.

the problem will eventually recur unless you switch to a dry filter.

CRC maf cleaner works really well. you will see the deposits on the maf elements & see how effective the CRC is in removing them.

no, i am not a CRC salesman

If you LIGHTLY oil the K&N, you shouldnt see a mess of oil getting sucked through the filter and fouling the MAF. I personally think that many k&n owners over-oil their filters.
Here's some info straight from K&N on the subject:

I agree with danzan - there may be a better cleaner out there, but I'm familiar with CRC, its available everywhere, and it does a decent job. I would clean the MAF first, then clean, lightly oil, and run your K&N a bit. Give it a little time and take it off and check the MAF again (should be easy to get to without the stock airbox in the way) after a while to see if any new deposits have formed on the MAF.
If you don't want to deal with it, you could go to a dry filter. I know some guys really like the "mushroom" filters from HKS / Trust.
Something that may be worth reading is this air filter comparison:

It seemed reasonably scientific and un-biased. I personally run a K&N on my TT and have had no problems yet.

Yeah, oil soaked air filters and mafs are a bad combo. I replaced my K&N with a dry flow from AEM. I soaked my sensor in a shot glass full of rubbing alcohol. Runs better than it ever has. Just make sure you let the MAF dry completely.
