Default plastic shield question

ok the other day i beat this 350 and i was going 120 when i slowed down and i took the exit and as i was turning around i heard this grinding noise and it the shield under the car had came off. I pushed it back in but it kept coming off so i took it home and took the shield off ( by the time i got home pieces were obviously missing). i called the dealership the part costs 186.00 but before i was gonna buy it the next day my tire got a hole in the side from who knows what. Had to get 4 brand new tires so that set me back. But my question is what purpose does the shield serve as? Does it protect anything from water damage or whatever cause i live in dallas and today its pouring nasty and i just got off work and i think my car was making this weird noise. It could be me or just the rain but i just wanna know the purpose of the plastic undersheild thingy. thanks

its there to give some protection of pipework from the elements and any oil dripping on you nice clean garage floor, many don't refit it because it has to be removed for oil and filter changes quick easy way to refit is use electrical ties those plastic things electricians use to keep wiring neat and they are cheaper than those things the dealer sells which always seem to come off but personally I would refit it

you could just put some radioshack wire loom tubing to put on all the pipes down there( they are the powersteering pressure lines) i did. they were starting to look a little bad

It does serve an aerodynamic purpose. Reduces drag under the car.
