all 225's are good, but the 03+ have a better ecu to tune with. So if you have big plans like a bigger turbo, that would be a better choice. If not, then dont worry about it because the 01 and 02 cars are just as good, just the ecu/vvt is differnt.
AMU = 01-02
BEA = 03+

Those are the only two engine codes for a 225. Like i said before, the '98-99 a4/passat are big port and the rest are all small port heads.

are these pretty relable in the sense if i where to buy a 50,000 mile TT i wont have to much problems or should i just put down more cash and try to find something with under 30,000 miles?

Mines over 100k and i have seen plenty with 150k+

just reg maintence, but other stuff tends to pop up. Its life and its a car so things are expected.
