Default Random ABS/ESP dash lights

First off I tried searching but couldn't find a match.

My 2001 6 speed Quattro randomly studders and lights up the ABS and ESP dash lights. When I turn off and on again, lights are one. There appears no pattern. I just picked up a Equus/Innova 3100c code reader hoping to catch a DTC number. Will I harm anything if I plug into the OBDII port while the car is still running? The code reader says the car needs to be off, them in the run position. Problem is, when I turn the car off, no DTCs show up on the reader.

Somewhere I read about a faulty ABS sensor problem that had to due with yaw. Am I on the right track? If I do catch a code, is there a good list of Audi DTCs?

Thanks in advance

Shouldn't be a problem to check for codes while its running, I've used vag-com while on the road, checked and cleared codes, and reset service interval lights.

this happened to me soon after i purchased my roadster. took it to the dealer and they replaced a "longitudinal" sensor in my traction control. took care of the problem.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions. Anyone have the OEM part #? Is it something a decent shade tree mechanic can do ? I'd rather do it myself instead of a dealer. None within 50 miles of here.

Maybe there's more to this. It's more frequent now and when it does go, it spasms and seems the power dies completely for a second (headlights blink, instrument needles zero, stereo pauses etc), then back up again with the yellow ABS and ESP symbol on along with a flashing red Brake. Tonight I was driving home and when I flipped on the high beams, it went into the funk.

Does this sound familiar to anyone else ? I know it need it dealer or Vagcommed to catch a code. My code reader Equus 3100c doesn't pick anything up.

Check your battery. These cars are very sensitive to low voltage. With everthing shut off you should see 12.5V minimum across the terminals.
